Role of Diet in Cancer Prevention

Diet and lifestyle factors play a major role in increasing or decreasing the risk of cancers irrespective of the family history and other genetic factors. Eating habits influence the health to a major extent than expected and the recent research studies show significant reduction in risk of cancer and boost up of immune system with specific healthy diet rich in nutrients. The following are the right foods which help in prevention of cancer.

3. Consumption of less Red meat
4. Cut down on Saturated fats

6. Soy protein and Seafood
Fruits and vegetables: According to a study conducted about the protective effect of role of fruits and vegetables in prevention of cancer a statistically significant data is noted in favour of this theory. Fruits and vegetables help in reducing the risk of cancer many times. They are protective against stomach cancer, colon cancer, pancreas cancer, cancers of oral cavity, pharynx, larynx, Breast cancer and lung cancer. Less cooked and fruits and vegetables without peeling should be preferred as the raw ones retain the essential nutrients well.

High Fibre Diet: High fibre is rich in Fruits, Vegetables and Whole grains. Fibre rich foods add bulk to the food and help in easy passage of food through the intestines. They help in clearing the cancer causing harmful substances from the gastrointestinal tract, thus keeping it healthy. High fibre diet reduces the risk of lung cancer and prostate cancer.
Consumption of less Red Meat: Red meat is rich in Saturated Fats and it lack fibre. Both factors are aggravating factors for development of cancers like Breast cancer and colon cancer. Vegetarians have less risk of developing few specific cancers than people who prefer to take meat often. Eating red meat occasionally and replacing it with sea foods is the better option for those who prefer meat in order to prevent few cancers.

Cut down on Saturated Fats: Fat diets have to be chosen wisely as few fat diets increase the risk of cancer while few decrease the risk of cancer. Saturated fats and trans fats increase the risk of cancer while Unsaturated fats and oils rich in omega 3 fatty acids are considered to be healthier and decrease the risk of cancers.
Antioxidant rich Diets: Antioxidant rich diets play a major role in preventing colorectal cancer.They prevent free radical reactions that occur in the cells which are supposed to be carcinogenic. Beta carotene, Vitamin C and Vitamin E are naturally available anti oxidants in carrot, orange, gooseberry. Vitamin E need to be taken as supplements as enough amounts are not available from the usual diet.

Soy protein and Seafood: Soy protein is rich in Isoflavones, Phytonutrients which inhibit the tumor growth by inhibiting Angiogenesis – new blood vessel formation within the tumor and it also helps to avoid carcinogenic reactions happening in the body. Soy protein protects against breast, prostate, colorectal and lung cancers.
Seafood is rich in unsaturated fatty acids and considered to be healthier than red meat.
